Today was just like every other day, beginning just like every other day. It all started when Claire got up to the sound of her alarm going off, her hand reaching out from under the warm embrace of the covers to bring her fist down upon the small mechanical object like the hand of God. Rolling over, she drew her arm up to cover her eyes, a groan leaving her person as she anguished at the thought of leaving her lovely bed. With a heavy sigh, her arms moving so that she could rub the sleep out of her eyes, she groggily removed the covers, body instantly covered in goosebumps as the much cooler air hit her skin. She let out another groan as she unwillingly made her way to the bathroom to begin to her routine, the same thing she did every day; shower, brush her teeth, do her hair, get dressed. It was the same everyday and she repeated the familiar motions with little thought.
Claire was almost surprised to find herself already in the llibrary once she could actually bother to think about what was going on around her. It wasn't like she had anybody to talk to as she got ready for the day; she was single like she had always been and she had an estranged sister. It was almost like she was alone, and this particular morning was no exception. She had been left to her thoughts as she got ready for her day, an early morning so that she could get the library in order for any visitors that would stop by throughout the day. Despite the fact that it was a library, there was a surprising amount of traffic throughout the day and many people visited the room full to the brim with books. She really shouldn't have been very surprised. With very little to do and few places to go throughout the entire bunker system, the library would be a popular place to visit; it would give a change of scenery and it could give one an escape to any land that they would like to visit.
It was for that reason that Claire had become a librarian in the first place, simply because she loved books and the escape from the dull reality that they provided. While it was also true that she had very few marketable skills and really nothing that she could provide for the betterment of the bunkers, she chose librarian because it just sounded like fun. She was out of school and she needed a job, something to get her mind off of everything that was happening around her, and the thought about being surrounded by piles and piles of books and all sorts of different types of literature just seemed like the perfect way to help her cope with everything that was happening. So even though she hated working and would rather be doing almost anything else instead of arriving at the cramped room at an ungodly hour, she guessed it wasn't all that bad. She had a job and she was constantly surrounded by books; it could be worse.
Moments after unlocking the door to the library, Claire found herself turning on the lights and walking towards the desk that she sat behind every day. Setting down her bag behind the table, she occupied the chair that she had designated for herself ever since she started working in the underground bunker. Grabbing a book that she had put in her purse to read the night before, she made herself comfortable, enjoying the silence that the emptiness of the room could provide for a short period of time. It was always quiet for the first hour or so of the morning, before everyone else started to arrive or visit in search of book. Such was the norm that had become her life, here in the sunless bunker beneath the ground.
