Another day patrolling the halls and listening to some of the other residences talk about going up to the surface again. The talk was depressing and Alec found it difficult to try and remain positive. He'd given up trying to pretend that he wasn't in an underground survivor bunker because Earth had been infected with an incurable virus. How could he pretend when there was evidence all around him to prove otherwise? Today hadn't been a great day. Well, none of the days had been great, but they'd definitely been better than this day. Alec couldn't really put a finger on why the day had been so miserable, but there was just something in the air that seemed to be bringing everyone down.
He got out the key to the condo and unlocked the door. He walked inside and closed the door and locked it. He shrugged off his bullet-proof vest and laid it on a small table near the door. He placed the key in his pocket and placed his gun on the rack attached to the wall to the left of the door. He sighed, closed his eyes, and rested his head against the heavy door. Right now he felt like he could punch a hole in the wall. He was so angry at the fact that life had to be this way. He'd dreamed of marrying Emma and starting a family, then buying a house with a big backyard the children could play in. But now it looked like the children would be trapped inside the bunkers for who-knows-how-long.
"I'm home, Emma," he said, trying and failing to make his voice sound cheerful. He turned to face the living room and looked around for Emma. She would know how to make him feel better. She could always make Alec smile again and forget his worries.

Ever since they had moved down into the bunker, Emma's world shrunk just a little smaller. Sometimes she felt like she was under a microscope, but maybe that's just the feeling of claustrophobia getting to her. Just being under the ground...in a bunker would drive anyone insane. It was for the best, right. To have to go through the pain and suffering of getting the virus, some people would prefer that than being stuck down in this for God knows how long. Emma tried to see the positive in all this. At least they are down here where it is safe. She was one of those people who preferred not to get the virus, because she had seen first hand what it can do to people, and she would wish this on no one. She had seen too many people die from this virus to last her a thousand lifetimes.
Today it was just the usual cases coming in, bumps and bruises, check ups, and the occasional occupation hazard. She finished checking on a little kid and gave her a little smile when the little girl jumped off the table and skipped to her mother. " I will see you in a few months for a follow up okay. You have a good day," she said and waved goodbye. Emma brushed some of her hair back and checked her watch. It was almost time for her shift to end, and she could go home to be with Alec. She walked through the hospital, and to her office and hung up her coat. She looked at a wedding picture of her and Alec, and she smiled. Now she couldn't wait to get home to him. She grabbed her stuff and walked to their condo.
She walked in, and didn't see him home. Maybe she could surprise him with a dinner of some sort. She went their room and changed into a loose t shirt, and jeans. She went to the kitchen and looked around for something to fix. Half and hour later, the condo smelled for the delicious dinner, and she heard Alec walk in. She took off the apron and turned off the burners and smiled when she saw him. " Hey babe, good to see you," she said and walked to him and kissed him. She looked into his eyes, he looked tired or down about something. She frowned a little, and placed her hand on his cheek and kissed him once more. She gently wrapped her arms around his neck, and felt his arms embrace her tightly around her waist protectively. " Whatever is on your mind, do you want to talk about it," she said softly in his ear.

Alec felt so much better as soon as he saw Emma's beautiful face, but he was still feeling down. He kissed her and rested his head in the crook of her neck for a moment. He took a deep breath and pulled away as he exhaled so he could look at Emma again. He gave her a weak smile and a shrug. "Dinner smells delicious… And I don't know what's wrong… I guess it's the fact that I'm trying to stay positive but it's difficult to do in those horribly lit hallways…" He said with a sigh.
He walked over to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water. He took a sip and sat on a stool by the kitchen counter. He rested his forehead on his hand and shook his head. "I saw some kids in the hall today and- I don't know… I want kids, Em, but I was thinking about what you said when I first brought the subject up. Who would want to raise a child in here? Bring them into this dismal, small world?"

Emma held him close to her and she kissed his neck. She felt his muscles tense under her hands, and she stepped closer. Feeling his warm breath touch her skin, and a little stubble on his chin brushed the skin on her neck. He was all man to her, and he was a hard worker. She rubbed his back and he stepped away and told her that dinner smelled delicious. She followed him to the kitchen and leaned against the counter as he got a bottle of water. When he mentioned having kids, it tugged at her heart. She was pregnant once, and she miscarried and didn't want to tell him. He was too occupied with what was going on, and that she never found the time to tell him. That was almost a month ago.
She took a chance and took a deep breath, " Alec, there's... something I've been meaning to tell you," she said and turned the burner off and knelt down in front of him and placed her hands on his knee. She took a deep breath and looked up and told him the whole truth. She was afraid of what he would say and how he would act. It was wrong of her to with hold information from him, but when he brought up having a kid, she couldn't keep her secret from him any longer. " I'm so sorry that I didn't tell you before... but I didn't know how or when after we moved down here. I'm so sorry," she said choking on words. She watched his face for a reaction, and she slowly got up and went to get the dishes ready, and give him some space. This would be a lot for him to take in at one time.

Alec's stomach twisted at the tone in Emma's voice when she said she had to tell him something. His mind ran through millions of things that could be wrong before he forced himself to stop thinking and just focus in on what Emma had to say. As he listened to what she told him about the miscarriage, he felt his heart drop to his feet and his throat tighten. He felt so betrayed and hurt… How could she have not told him about something so important? He stared at the ground and was only vaguely aware of Emma getting up to get dishes ready. He wasn't hungry anymore. His mind was reeling with emotions and he wasn't sure how to handle all of this right now. He decided the best way to handle it for now was to hide how he was feeling. It wasn't a healthy thing to do but he didn't realize that.
He took a deep breath and helped Emma put the dishes on the table. "I… don't really understand why you didn't tell me right away, but I'm sure you had your reasons. It was probably the best thing to do at the time…" He didn't believe the last sentence one bit, though. "How about we talk about this later, huh? I don't want dinner to be spoiled." He gave her a weak smile and then helped her put dinner on the table.

" We had the virus scare, then we moved into here all too quick. Then a day after, I lost the baby. That was the same time that you had so much going on, and I had so much going on, that I didn't find the time to tell you. I didn't want to burden you with something else to trouble you," she said softly as she handed him a plate, and his hand touched hers. She looked at him and her heart raced. " I still am sorry Alec. I never wanted to hurt you. I can tell right now that this is troubling you. I know you Alec," she said and stepped to his face and looked into his eyes. She nodded and agreed that they should eat dinner before it spoils. They ate dinner in mostly silence, instead of their usual chats about their day. She took the dishes into the kitchen after dinner and slowly washed them and looked down as she washed them.
When she was done with the dishes, she walked to their bedroom and stripped off her clothes, and walked into the shower. She felt the hot water run down her body, and she ran her hands down her sides as she started to lean against the wall. She bit her lip and leaned her head back and she closed her eyes.

Alec was thankful for the silence during the meal because he could think over what Emma had said to him. On one hand, he was grateful she hadn't wanted to put more stress and sadness on him, but on the other hand, he was hurt that she hadn't said anything. It made him feel like she thought that the miscarriage wasn't that important to him, but it was. He'd have to ask her later on.
He wanted to help her with the dishes like he usually did, but something told him he shouldn't. So he went into the bedroom and sat on the bed. He wished he could have a TV right now to fill the tense silence, but the only entertainment was the movie theatre and he didn't feel like going there tonight. He saw Emma go into the bathroom and heard the shower come on, but he didn't feel like joining her tonight. He waited a few minutes before walking into the bathroom. He'd knocked twice to let her know he was coming in. He leaned against the sink and folded his arms.
"Em, I do appreciate you not wanting to burden me, I really do… But- You do know that the miscarriage is something big to me, right? I mean, I don't want you thinking that it wouldn't have mattered if you ever told me or not." His tone was hesitant and almost small like a little boy.

Emma stood in the shower, her eyes were closed, and all she wanted to do was take back all that she had said. She wished that things were different, she wished that she hadn't gotten pregnant, and that she didn't have the miscarriage. But things happen for a reason, and maybe it was a good thing that they didn't end up having a baby. The stress of raising a child in this place. Emma would lose her mind, and she would not be happy to raise a child without her family around. Since the day that they moved under ground, Emma often thought about what it would be like to have a child. To raise it with love and joy, but this was no place to raise a child. Especially not in a hole in the ground. Some women still came to her and gave birth to children, but there were some who still felt it unwise. She would like to have child someday, but would it be soon?
Emma snapped out of her thought state, opening her eyes, and she heard a knock at the door and then she realized that Alec had walked inside. She slowly leaned off of the wall and stood closer to the shower curtain and turned off the water. She listened to him, and bit her lip hard trying to hold back tears. " But I felt like you had a right to know Alec. I hate that I kept this secret from you. I took a vow 3 years ago to never lie, and I broke that promise," she said and took a deep breath. She reached her arm out, grabbing her towel, and wrapped it around her body. She stepped out and stood in front of him. She ran her hands up his chest, looking down, and then looked into his eyes. " I don't know what I was thinking keeping it from you. I want to have kids, but I am scared to raise it here," she said softly.

Alec was relieved to know that Emma felt like he had a right to know. He shook his head and held her hands in his, looking into her eyes. "You didn't lie, Em. You just… Didn't tell me for awhile," he said to her. "So don't think you broke a promise." He then nodded when she spoke about her fear of raising a child here. "I'm scared, too. But you know, this might not last forever. I still think we all have a right to go up to the surface again one day. Maybe give it a few months, but I'm sure people will be itching and fighting to get out of here." He kissed her forehead and pulled her into a hug. All he wanted right now was to be with her and make her feel safe and wanted.

Emma nodded and tried not to feel despair. She had already experienced the supposed cabin fever through some of the patients that came into her hospital. She had a patient who came in who was clubbed on the head for trying to turn the hatch, and today she had a guard who came in who had gotten minor cuts for breaking up a fight. Yep, life in this place was getting tense at tense. At least among the adults. The kids and teens were just itching to get out of this place. Emma was just trying to keep herself calm till that time when it came. " I already had a guard come in today after he broke up a fight at the main gate. The fights have been getting more frequent. We were not meant to be locked down here," she said trying to not sound peeved.
She took a deep breath when he kissed her head, " I'm sorry, I don't want to be upset at you for no reason," she said softly and stepped away and went to take off the towel. She took it off, and put on one of his old baggy shirts, and a pair of boxers. She sat on the bed and fell back on the bed, bending her knees and looked at the ceiling.
